Troubleshooting & FAQ

Troubleshooting

”I don’t see the Edit Order button” (customer-facing)

The customer-facing “Manage your order” card only ever appears on an order the app considers eligible right now. Work through these in order:

  1. Is customer self-service editing actually turned on? Settings → Storefront order edit → Order editing → Enable Order Editing Flow — and did you click Save settings afterward?
  2. Is the store’s plan Growth or above? This entire feature is gated to Growth and Pro.
  3. Is the store using Shopify’s new customer accounts? Classic customer accounts don’t support this extension at all.
  4. Has the editing window closed? Check your configured editing window or daily cutoff against how long ago the order was placed.
  5. Is the order fulfilled or cancelled? Both make an order permanently ineligible, regardless of the time window.
  6. Does the order or its customer carry a restricted tag? Check Order tags and Customer tags restrictions.
  7. Does the order contain a restricted-tag product under “Disable complete order editing” mode? Check Tag-based restrictions.

”The app won’t load” / “Couldn’t connect to Shopify” (admin)

Open the app from Shopify Admin → Apps → NV Order Editor, not a bookmarked or externally-shared URL — the app needs to load inside Shopify’s own admin frame to authenticate. Reload the page once. If it persists, contact support with the exact error text shown.

”Edit order” is greyed out with a lock icon in the Orders list

That store is on the Free plan — direct order editing requires Starter or above. Duplicating an order is still available on Free.

An edit I made shows a “Cancel and re-create order?” warning I wasn’t expecting

This means the specific change you made (most commonly, changing the customer on an existing order, or altering an already-applied discount) is something Shopify’s order-editing API refuses to apply to a live order under any circumstances — it isn’t a bug or a plan restriction. See When an edit needs a cancel-and-recreate for exactly what happens if you confirm it.

A customer says they were charged twice / an item shows twice after a variant swap

This should never happen — when a customer swaps a line to a different variant, the app verifies the old line was actually removed before considering the swap complete, and fails safely with a clear error instead of leaving a duplicate if anything about that verification looks wrong. If you see what looks like a duplicate line on an order’s history/timeline, check the order’s current line items and current total specifically (in Shopify admin) rather than the edit history — Shopify’s own order timeline shows every historical add/remove as a separate entry, which can look like duplicate charges at a glance even when the order’s real current total is correct. If the real current total is actually wrong, contact support immediately with the order number.

A refund I expected wasn’t issued automatically

Check three things: Enable automatic refunds is on; the order was actually paid through a real, refundable transaction (an order marked “paid manually” in admin can’t be auto-refunded — there’s nothing for Shopify to reverse); and your Recent activity feed, which logs the exact reason whenever an automatic refund couldn’t complete so you can process it manually.

Bulk tag action partially failed

The result message names how many orders updated successfully and the error for the first failure. The most common cause is an order that was cancelled or otherwise locked between when you selected it and when the bulk action ran — reselect and retry just the failed order(s).

A customer’s postal code / address won’t save

This is a real Shopify validation failure being shown to you verbatim (e.g. a postal code that doesn’t match the selected country’s format) — it’s working as intended. Ask the customer to double-check the address and country match.

Metafield rule isn’t making a field mandatory as expected

Confirm every condition on the rule actually matches the order (all conditions must match — it’s an AND, not an OR), and that the metafield you expect to become required is actually checked under that specific rule. A metafield can be required by one rule and optional under a different one; if any rule matching the order requires it, it’s mandatory.

FAQ

How is this different from Shopify’s own draft orders? Draft orders are for building a new order before it’s placed. NV Order Editor edits orders that already exist — real, placed orders with a customer and payment attached — which Shopify’s own admin doesn’t let you change directly beyond a few fields.

What happens when an edit isn’t supported by Shopify’s API? The app detects it automatically and offers to cancel the order and create an exact replacement with your changes applied, writing a note to both orders’ timelines so nothing is lost. See When an edit needs a cancel-and-recreate.

Can customers really edit their own orders? Only if you turn it on. Growth and Pro plans include an optional editing window (as short as a preset 15 minutes or as long as you set) where a signed-in customer can update their contact info, address, or items from their own Shopify customer account — closing automatically once the window ends.

Does editing an order affect inventory? Yes — the same way Shopify’s own order editing does. Increasing a quantity (or adding a new item) decrements available inventory for that variant; removing or decreasing restocks it, unless a specific action you’re taking offers you a “skip restocking” choice.

Does the app ever charge a customer’s card automatically? No. Applying an edit that increases an order’s total creates or increases an outstanding balance and (if notifications are left on) emails the customer an invoice — it never charges a saved payment method without the customer taking their own action.

Can I bulk-edit tags across many orders at once? Yes, on the Pro plan — select multiple orders in the Orders list and add or remove a tag across all of them in one action.

How is billing handled? All charges go through Shopify’s own billing system and appear on your regular Shopify invoice. Every paid plan is available monthly or yearly (yearly saves 2 months), and you can change or cancel your plan anytime from the Plans page.

Is the Free plan a trial? No — it works for real, ongoing use within its 20-orders/month limit, indefinitely. There’s no forced expiry.

What happens if I hit my plan’s monthly order limit? New order creation pauses until the cycle resets or you upgrade. Your existing orders, editing them, and customer self-service editing (where included in your plan) all keep working normally regardless of the limit.

Does customer self-service editing need anything added to my theme? No. It’s a native Shopify customer-account extension that Shopify itself injects into the order status page once you turn it on — there’s no theme code, app embed, or app block to add.

What data does the app store about my customers? Only what’s needed to operate: your app settings, temporary order-creation drafts (auto-deleted with your draft or on a schedule), and an activity log of actions taken (which you can see yourself in Recent activity). The app supports Shopify’s mandatory GDPR webhooks (customers/data_request, customers/redact, shop/redact) for data requests and erasure.

Uninstallation

How to uninstall: remove the app the normal Shopify way — Settings → Apps and sales channels, find NV Order Editor, and uninstall it.

What happens immediately:

  • The app’s access to your store is revoked by Shopify.
  • Any active paid subscription is cancelled through Shopify’s billing system — you won’t be charged again.
  • Customer self-service editing stops appearing on order pages right away, since the extension can no longer authenticate.

What happens to existing orders: nothing. Every order the app already created, edited, or tagged keeps whatever state it’s in — line items, tags, timeline notes, and notes/PO numbers/metafields already written to real Shopify orders live on Shopify’s own systems, not the app’s, and are completely unaffected by uninstalling.

What happens to your configuration: your Settings (both admin rules and storefront/customer-editing settings) are kept, specifically so that reinstalling the app later restores your preferences instead of resetting them to defaults. In-progress order-creation drafts and the activity log are cleared.

If you reinstall: you’ll land back on whichever plan tier your settings reflect conceptually, but billing itself starts fresh — you’ll need to re-choose a plan on the Plans page, since your previous subscription was already cancelled at uninstall. Your Settings configuration (restrictions, metafield rules, storefront editing rules) will already be exactly as you left them.

Full erasure: if you want your settings actually deleted rather than kept for a possible reinstall, that’s a separate, explicit data-erasure request (Shopify’s shop/redact compliance process), not something that happens automatically just from uninstalling.
