NV Order Editor — Complete Guide
Shopify makes it easy to edit a draft order before it’s placed, but a real, placed order — one with a customer and payment attached — is a different story. Shopify’s own admin only lets you change a handful of fields on a placed order, and its order-editing API refuses several common changes outright (a different customer, a price change on an already-fulfilled line, a currency change).
NV Order Editor is a Shopify app that adds a full editing screen to every order in your admin, handles the edits Shopify’s own API can apply directly, and automatically cancels-and-recreates the order for the edits it can’t — with a clear note left on both orders’ timelines so nothing is lost. It also adds an optional customer self-service editing window, so your shoppers can fix their own mistakes (wrong address, wrong size, changed their mind about a quantity) without opening a support ticket.
This guide is written for a Shopify merchant, not a developer. It assumes no prior knowledge of the app, and walks through every screen and every setting in the order you’ll actually encounter them.
Documentation sections
This guide is split into six pages so you can jump straight to what you need:
- Getting Started (this page) — what the app does, installation, and your first order.
- Admin Guide — the full Shopify Admin experience: Dashboard, Order Creator, Order Editor, Duplicate, cancel-and-recreate, bulk tags, admin settings, and billing.
- Storefront Settings Reference — every customer self-service editing setting, explained one by one.
- Customer Experience — exactly what your shoppers see and can do, step by step.
- Workflows & Use Cases — how editing affects price, tax, inventory and refunds; real merchant scenarios; edge cases.
- Troubleshooting & FAQ — problem → cause → solution, frequently asked questions, and uninstalling.
What the app does
| Capability | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Direct order editing | Change quantities, tags, PO number, shipping, notes, and metafields on an existing order — no draft-order workaround. |
| Automatic cancel & re-create | For edits Shopify’s own API refuses (customer change, a fulfilled line’s price, currency), the app cancels the order and creates an exact replacement, with a note on both timelines. |
| One-click order duplication | Rebuild any past order — customer, items, discounts, and shipping copied — as a new order you can edit before creating. |
| Custom order creation | Build a brand-new order with real products or custom line items, discounts, shipping, payment terms, and a custom order number. |
| Customer self-service editing | Let signed-in customers update their own contact info, address, or items for a merchant-defined window after checkout — with optional automatic refunds. |
| Bulk tag operations | Add or remove a tag across many orders at once from the Orders list. |
| Admin order-page shortcuts | ”Edit” and “Duplicate” appear directly on Shopify’s own order page. |
Who should use it
- Stores that get support tickets asking to change an address, size, or quantity after checkout.
- Stores that need to fix mistakes on orders (wrong discount, missing PO number, wrong shipping method) without the friction of Shopify’s own limited order-edit screen.
- Stores that regularly duplicate orders (recurring customers, wholesale, replacement orders).
- Any store that wants to reduce “can you change my order” support volume by letting customers do it themselves, inside a window you control.
Requirements
You need:
- A Shopify store with admin access.
- The NV Order Editor app installed from the Shopify App Store.
- Permission to approve app charges if you plan to use a paid plan — the Free plan needs no charge approval at all.
There’s nothing to install on your storefront theme. The admin side works the moment the app is installed. The optional customer self-service editing screen is a Shopify-native customer account extension — it does need one manual, one-time placement step in your Shopify admin (Shopify requires this for every app that adds a block to the order status page; it’s not something an app can do for you), covered below in First-time setup. There’s no theme code to add or app embed to enable — the placement happens in Shopify’s own Customer accounts editor, not your theme.
Note: Customer self-service editing needs your store’s customer accounts to be enabled (Shopify’s “new customer accounts,” not the legacy classic accounts) and requires the Growth plan or above. If you’re on classic customer accounts, the customer-facing editing screen won’t appear — everything else in the app still works normally.
Installation
- Find NV Order Editor on the Shopify App Store, or open the direct install link we’ve given you.
- Click Install app.
- Shopify shows a permissions screen listing exactly what the app is asking to access. Review it — see the table below — then click Install app to approve.
- Shopify redirects you into the app, which opens inside your Shopify Admin (under Apps → NV Order Editor).
Permissions requested during installation
Shopify groups these into a single approval screen. Here’s what each group is for and why the app needs it:
| Permission | Why the app needs it |
|---|---|
| Read and write orders | To show your orders list and apply edits (quantity, shipping, tags, notes) to a real order. |
| Read and write order edits | Shopify’s own order-editing API — this is the mechanism the app uses to apply in-place changes without cancelling the order. |
| Read and write draft orders | The Order Creator screen builds a draft internally before turning it into a real order, the same way Shopify’s own “Create order” screen does. |
| Read and write customers | To search for and attach a customer to an order, and to create a new customer on the spot when needed. |
| Read and write payment terms | To offer “pay later” (Net terms, or a due date) when creating an order on the Growth plan and above. |
| Read products | To search your catalog when adding items to an order. |
| Fulfillment order permissions (assigned and merchant-managed) | To place and release fulfillment holds when the customer self-service editing window is open, if you turn that on. |
Nothing here lets the app charge a customer’s card directly, delete your store, or access anything outside orders/customers/products. All paid-plan billing goes through Shopify’s own billing system — the app itself never touches a card number.
What happens immediately after installation
- The app opens on the Dashboard (see the Admin Guide) — you land here every time you open the app from your Shopify Admin sidebar.
- You start on the Free plan automatically. No charge is created, and nothing is billed, until you choose a paid plan yourself on the Plans page.
- Your existing orders are untouched — installing the app doesn’t modify anything. It only starts working the moment you use one of its screens (Order Creator, Order Editor, Duplicate) or turn on a setting.
- Storefront customer self-service editing is off by default, even on plans that include it, until you explicitly turn it on in Settings → Storefront order edit → Order editing → Enable Order Editing Flow. This is deliberate: your customers see nothing new on their order pages until you’ve configured it the way you want.
First-time setup — recommended path
Follow this order the first time you use the app:
1. Decide what admin-side rules you want (optional)
Open Settings → Admin order create if you want to require a customer or shipping address before an order can be created, or if you want to control SKU/barcode visibility. Most stores can skip this and use the defaults. Full detail: Admin Guide → Admin settings.
2. Create a test order
Open Order Creator from the Dashboard, add a real product, attach a test customer (or yourself), and click Create order. This confirms the app can read your catalog and write orders correctly before you rely on it for a real customer. Full detail: Admin Guide → Order Creator.
3. Edit that test order
Open the order you just created from the Orders list, change a quantity or the shipping method, and save. Confirm the change actually appears on the real order in Shopify’s own order page.
4. Decide on customer self-service editing (optional, Growth plan and above)
If you want customers to be able to edit their own orders, work through the full Storefront Settings Reference — start with Enable Order Editing Flow, then set an editing window, then decide what customers may change.
Then do the required one-time placement step — this is a Shopify admin action, separate from anything in the app’s own Settings, and easy to miss:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Customer accounts.
- Click Customize. This opens Shopify’s checkout/customer-accounts editor.
- At the top of the editor, click the page selector (it opens showing Checkout) and switch to Order status under the Customer accounts group.
- In the Main section of the left sidebar, click Add block.
- Find NV Order Editor in the list of apps and choose its Order editing block.
- Click Save in the top right of the editor.
Until you do this, customers will not see an edit option on their order page, even with Enable Order Editing Flow turned on and saved. Once the block is added, it stays — you only do this once per store, not per order or per customer.
Finally, place one more test order through your actual storefront checkout (not the admin Order Creator) so you can see the real customer-facing screen — see Customer Experience for what to expect.
5. Choose a plan
Compare plans on the Plans page. The Free plan is not a trial — it works for real, ongoing use within its 20-orders/month limit. Upgrade only once you know which features you actually need. Full detail: Admin Guide → Plans & billing.
Quick-start checklist
- App installed, permissions approved.
- Reviewed admin order-creation restrictions in Settings (or confirmed the defaults are fine).
- Created one test order through Order Creator.
- Edited that test order and confirmed the change landed on the real Shopify order.
- Duplicated that test order once, to see how it works.
- Decided whether customer self-service editing is something you want (Growth plan+).
- If yes: configured an editing window and which fields customers may change.
- If yes: added the Order editing block to the Order status page in Settings → Customer accounts → Customize (required one-time step — see above).
- Placed one real test order through your storefront checkout to see the customer-facing screen.
- Picked a plan on the Plans page (Free is fine to start).
- Cancelled your test order(s) so they don’t clutter your real order list — or left them, since they don’t affect billing or reporting beyond counting toward your monthly order-creation limit.
Troubleshooting first-time setup
The app won’t load / shows “Couldn’t connect to Shopify.” Open the app from Shopify Admin → Apps → NV Order Editor rather than a bookmarked URL — the app needs to be loaded inside the Shopify Admin frame to authenticate. If it still fails, reload the page once; if that doesn’t help, see Troubleshooting & FAQ.
I don’t see the app in my Shopify Admin sidebar. Check Settings → Apps and sales channels in your Shopify Admin to confirm the app shows as installed. If it’s there but not in the sidebar, refresh your browser — Shopify sometimes needs a reload to pick up a newly installed app’s navigation.
I turned on customer self-service editing but don’t see anything on the storefront. By far the most common cause: the Order editing block hasn’t been added to the Order status page yet. Turning on Enable Order Editing Flow in the app’s Settings is not enough by itself — Shopify separately requires you to place the block via Settings → Customer accounts → Customize → Order status → Add block → NV Order Editor → Order editing → Save (see step 4 in First-time setup above). Beyond that, this also needs Shopify’s new customer accounts (not classic) and the Growth plan or above, and it only appears on eligible orders within your configured editing window — see Customer Experience and Storefront Settings Reference for exactly when the screen shows.
Going live
Once your test orders behave the way you expect, there’s nothing further to “switch on” — the app is already live the moment you installed it. Continue to the Admin Guide for full detail on every screen, or straight to the Storefront Settings Reference if customer self-service editing is your main goal.
